How can someone call oneself a trapezist today, that is the object of this thesis. The aim and ambition of the project is to understand how an artis's identity is built up and defined in a circus, which now is currently multiform. This query about the trapezist's activity is indeed an integrated part of wider considerations on changes in the circus. The question is to point out the tenseness, which drives both a divided world and each of its participants. Based on an ethnographic enquiry and various methods to collect and analyse what is said and what is done, this survey describes several phases in the life of a trapezist : body learning of the activity, professionnal practice of the trapeze, adopted way of life. Moreover it pays particular attention to the argumentative logics, which underlie logics of multiple actions and enable to associate the technician and the artist in order to define oneself as a trapezist.

Comment se dit-on trapéziste aujourd'hui, tel est l'objet de cette thèse. L'ambition de la recherche vise à comprendre comment une identité d'artiste se construit et se définit, dans un cirque désormais pluriel. En effet, ce questionnement sur l'activité des trapezistes est integré à une reflexion plus générale portant sur les transformations du cirque. Il s'agit de mettre en lumière les tensions animant à la fois un monde eclaté et chacun de ses acteurs. Sappuyant sur une enquête ethnographique et une diveristé de méthodes permettant de recueillir et d'analyser le dire et le faire, l'étude décrit plusieurs moments d'une vie de trapéziste : apprentissage par le corps de l'activité, exercice professionnel du trapèze, mode de vie adopté. Elle s'attache, en outre, à porter une attention particulière sur les logiques argumentatives sous-tendant des logiques d'action multiples permettant, pour se définir en tant que trapéziste, d'associer le technicien et l'artiste.
