French ecologists took part in most of the elections from 1974 to 1995. The first part of the thesis outlines historical, descriptive and chronological approach of ecologists' electorals campaigns as perceived through the eyes of the media (i. E. Newspapers and tv). The aim is to discover and analyse the process by which the media representation of the ecologists has been structured through three differents stages : the period preceding the formation of "les verts" (1974-1983), the period since then ("les verts" : 1984-1995) and, finally, the campaign for the last presidential election (1995). The second part shows that "les verts" play only a minor role in the construction of their own public image by analysing the ways in which they have learnt to live with difficulty in a world of communication strategies (e. G. Relations with the media, internal elections, organization of ecologists a. G. M. . . ) their limited experience of political power is an illustration of their difficulty in providing a faithful image of their activity and has often led them to fall into the "media trap".

De 1974 a 1995, les ecologistes francais participent a la plupart des competitions electorales. En privilegiant une approche historique, descriptive et chronologique, la premiere partie de la these presente les campagnes electorales des ecologistes a travers la mediatisation (articles de presse, reportages audiovisuels. . . ) qui en a ete faite. L'objectif est de reperer, de decrire, et d'analyser les processus qui determinent la representation mediatique des ecologistes ainsi que son evolution. L'observation concerne la "galaxie" ecologiste (1974 -1983), puis le parti "les verts" (1984-1995), et enfin la campagne electorale de la candidate ecologiste a l'election presidentielle de 1995. La deuxieme partie de la these montre que les verts ne sont que des acteurs mineurs dans la construction de leur propre image. La maniere dont les verts apprehendent la place et le role a accorder a leur communication (relations entre les verts et les medias, mecanismes de designation des leaders, organisation des debats. . . ) est presentee et analysee. Les resultats de cette approche generale sont precises et completes par l'etude de temps politiques qui interessent notre problematique. Le temps de l'evenement mediatique est caracterise par une inattendue et importante exposition mediatique qui piege les verts. Le temps de l'exercice du pouvoir revele les difficultes des verts a participer de maniere efficace a l'elaboration d'une image sous contraintes.
