Librarians and special librarians do not seem to be socially, economically, technically and culturally adapted to their environment. This situation is the more paradoxical and evil that at the same time the western societies are moving to an "informational era". Their practices are strongly, if not exclusively, influenced by empirism and tradition. They fail, by ignorance or neglect, to base them on theoretical foundations. They are not considered as "professionals". The effectiveness of information systems is largely discussed. Even if, at the present time, the theoretical foundations are not well established, some exist which will allow the "information specialists" to identify and call the same objects with the same words, to understand each other, to communicate with other specialists, to have a better understanding of the phenomena they consider, and so to manage them in a better way, to explain their "professional" choice, to foresee new situations, to convey this framed knowledge within "information science schools", in a word, to be real "professionals". This leads to new and enlarged theoretical researches in the fields of "information" and "communication", to a professional training and in some countries, like in france, to the gathering of all the varied "information specialists" in one single "professional group" to face new challenges.

Bibliothecaires et documentalistes manifestent une inadaptation economique, sociale, culturelle, technique a leur environnement ce qui est d'autant plus paradoxal et nefaste que les societes occidentales semblent entrer dans l'ere de l'information et de sa communication. Ces personnels gardent une pratique fortement, si ce n'est exclusivement, marquee par l'empirisme et par la repetition de l'experience acquise au fil du temps, ignorant ou negligeant de la fonder sur des bases theoriques. Leur caractere "professionnel" est conteste. L'ergonomie, au sens large, des systemes d'information documentaire apparait mediocre. Ces bases theoriques meme si elles sont encore insuffisantes, leur permettraient de commencer a considerer et a appeler les memes objets de la meme facon, a se comprendre, a pouvoir communiquer avec les autres, a mieux comprendre et organiser les phenomenes observes, a expliquer leurs choix professionnels, a predire des situations, a pouvoir transmettre ce savoir formalise dans le cadre des organismes de formation, pour tout dire, a etre "professionnels". Ce double constat aboutit a une demande de recherche theorique dans les "sciences de l'information et de la communication", a une redefinition de la formation des professionnels, celle-ci allant de pair, dans les pays comme la france, avec un depassement du poids de l'histoire, et donc avec un regroupement des hommes, bibliothecaires et documentalistes, en une meme profession.
