Investigative reporting in france, largely unrecognized, has attained a level comparable to that of the usa. This movement reflects a dynamic visible in the usa following watergate, which involves a general reassessement of the ethics of the profession, and a transformation of its legal environment. Investigative reporting requires that the reporter adopt a methodological and psychological approach fundamentally different from the conventional practice of journalism. The personal involvement of the reporter with his sources is intrinsic to any extended investigation, and incompatible with the canons of objectivity. The reporter's experience of the investigation is reproduced in the composition of the story. The narrative strategies of investigative reporting attempt to reconcile dramatic impact with credibility.

Le journalisme d'investigation en france a atteint un niveau de developpement comparable a celui d'outre-atlantique. Tout comme aux etats-unis durant la periode qui a suivi le watergate, la profession se trouve confrontee a une crise eontologique, et a une transformation de son environnement juridique, qui menacent ses acquis. Il est donc necessaire d'analyser la theorie et la pratique du journalisme d'investigation du point de vue du reporter. A travers trois etudes de cas, on voit que le journalisme d'investigation implique, pour le reporter, une demarche particuliere sur le plan methodologique et psychologique, differente de celle du journalisme conventionnel. L'implication personnelle du journaliste (avec ses sources notamment) est partie integrante de toute investigation poussee, ainsi qu'une prise de position incompatible avec les regles de l'objectivite. Cette demarche se traduit, dans le recit d'investigation, par des strategies narratives inspirees du recit romanesque, visant a concilier credibilite et impact dramatique.
