Des herbiers aux fichiers informatiques : l'evolution du traitement de l'information dans la police

Since the xviiith century, the police has constructed itself around a highly complex network of indexes, files and papers where information about the individuals are recorded, thus, the police adjusted to the new ways of knowing that were set up by modern science. The new techniques of information processing finally find their way within the police institution through the use of computers. Such a use of the new machines allow the keeping up of order within the indexes and the files but it raises up also some fears about human rights and liberty.

Depuis le xviiieme siecle, la police s'est edifiee autour d'un reseau complexe de fichiers et de papiers ou sont enregistrees des informations sur les individus. Ainsi, la police se conforme-t-elle aux nouvelles modalites de savoir instaurees par la science moderne. L'evolution des techniques de traitement de l'information conduit finalement la police a utiliser des ordinateurs. L'emploi de ces machines permet de maintenir l'ordre dans les fichiers, mais suscite egalement des craintes concernant les atteintes aux libertes.
