The aim of this study is to contribute to the perception "formulation", and classification of images in a less arbitrary fashion. It suggests a new approach to the organisation and management of the contents of picture libraries, image banks. The photographic image is a "cristallisation of the visual moment", a representation:more or less faithful- of the objects around us. Classification is a key concept for retrieving images when necessary ; however, an iconogrpahic document only becomes operational if it is classified according to criteria which are themselves operational - intrinsic to the image. An image is perceived according to analytical criteria concerning the forms of the content, breaking down the image and momentarily leaving aside the significant content to concentrate on the containing factors or features ; our approach is in fact characterised by a "phenomenological effort". This study is divided into three parts : theoretical, methodological, experimental. It is intended for practical use and is essentially concerned with a "theory of practice". It proposes reference scales and an index listing characteristics for the classification of the ephotogra- phic image based on fundamental concepts- "the morphologic dimensions of image analysis"- which have been sorted out and verified : iconicity, pregnance, complexity, polysemia, aesthetics, historicity as well as on semantic criteria.

Le but de cette recherche est de contribuer a percevoir, "rediger" et classer l'image avec moins d'arbitraire. Elle offre une nouvelle demarche pour l'organisation et la gestion des fonds des iconotheques, des banques d'images. L'image photographique est une "cristallistion de l'instant visuel", elle est une representation plus ou moins fidele des objets du monde. La classification est un iconographique ne devient operationnel que s'il est classe selon des criteres eux memes operationnels, intrinseques a l'image. L'image est apprehendee selon des criteres d'analyse des formes du contenu afin de le segmenter, en laissant provisoirement de cote le contenu signifiant, pour nous interesser principalement au contenant, en effet notre demarche s'est caracterisee par un "effort phenomenologique". La presente recherche se divise en trois parties : theorique, methodologique, experimentale. Elle est orientee a des fins pratiques et s'inscrit essentiellement dans "une theorie de la pratique". Elle propose des echelles de reference et une fiche caracteristique pour le classement de l'image photographique basee sur des concepts fondamentaux - "les dimensions morphologiques" d'analyse de l'image - degagees et verifiees : iconocite, pregnance, complexite, polysemie, esthetique, historicite et a titre complementaire sur des criteres semantiques.
