This thesis is the result of a sociological research which was focused on the collective imaginary of the Portuguese community in France. The study concentrates on the films devoted to this particular social group along four decades, between 1967 and 2007. The notorious discretion of the Portuguese community in France, as far as public space is concerned, is such that Portuguese gained the reputation of being invisible in the French society. This situation was especially decisive in our decision to take up this research work. Through a deep and systematic analysis of the images which were associated with this social group, one can grasp, indeed, a better understanding of its collective life. In order to complete our investigation, a double perspective was needed, therefore we took into account not only the representations of the Portuguese community produced from the perspective of French society, but also those representations that the Portuguese community produced about itself, along this period of forty years. Our research, based on a sociological study of films, aims at identifying and understanding the major symbolic elements which shape the collective imaginary of the Portuguese community in France.

Cette thèse est le résultat d'une recherche sociologique ayant pour objet l'imaginaire collectif de la communauté d'origine portugaise installée en France. Plus spécifiquement, l'étude porte sur les films consacrés à ce groupe social et qui ont été réalisés au cours de quatre décennies (entre 1967 et 2007). La discrétion notoire dont a toujours fait preuve la communauté portugaise dans l'espace public français, au point que cette communauté jouit d'une certaine réputation d'invisibilité au sein de la société française, a constitué l'un des motifs de ce travail. A travers une enquête approfondie sur les images associées à ce groupe social, la vie collective de la communauté portugaise en France se laisse en effet saisir d'une manière neuve. Pour mener à bien une telle enquête, il nous a fallu à la fois envisager les représentations associées à la communauté portugaise immigrée dans le contexte de la société d'accueil, et les représentations d'elle-même que cette communauté a pu produire au long de la période considérée. Notre recherche, fondée sur l'étude sociologique des images en mouvement, s'est ainsi proposée de saisir les principaux éléments symboliques qui structurent l'imaginaire collectif des immigrés portugais en France et de leurs descendants.
