Suicide a fortaleza : contribution aux etudes de la representation sociale du phenomene

The aim of this research was to determine which representations the inhabitants of fortaleza make of themselves in the phenomenon of suicide. The study of those representations enabled us to aprehend the way of sociability pertaining the group in question : the act of suicide is largely penalized by the culture of this city of the brazilian northeast. This fact made us to follow a solitary itinerary, without scientific data previously made, as we did not have any work on this subject. We used a diversified methodology, approaching the phenomenon of suicide in a ethongraphic perspective, but also resorting to a statistical analysis. We think that to understand the phenomenon of suicide in fortaleza it is necessary to be positioned in the climate of violence existing in this city, where the suicide rate is low, but the homicide rate is high. As an intermediate zone between the suicide and the homicide, a third element arises : the accident, this element can be decodified, frequently, as a phenomenon that reminds of a suicidal attitude, rather than an homicidal one. We believe that the suicide, as it encloses in itself the cycle of violence, is not acceptable in the society of this city.

L'objectif de cette recherche a ete de determiner quelles representations se font les habitants de fortaleza d'aujourd'hui du phenomene du suicide. L'etude de ces representations nous a permis d'apprehender le mode de sociabilite particulier au groupe en question : l'acte du suicide est largement penalise par la culture de cette ville du nordeste bresilien. Cet etat de fait nous a contraints a suivre un itineraire solitaire, sans donnees scientifiques prealables, car nous ne disposions d'aucun travail ayant pu etre realise sur le sujet. Nous avons adopte une methodologie diversifiee, en abordant le phenomene du suicide dans une perspective ethnographique, tout en ayant recours aussi a une analyse statistique. Nous pensons que, pour comprendre le phenomene du suicide a fortaleza, il est necessaire de se placer dans le climat de violence existant dans cette ville, ou le taux de suicide est faible et ou, au contraire, le taux d'homicide est eleve. Comme zone intermediaire entre le suicide et l'homicide, apparait un 3eme element : l'accident. Ce dernier peut etre decodifie, assez frequemment, comme un phenomene qui renvoie a une attitude suicidaire, plutot qu'a un homicide. Nous croyons que le suicide, parcequ'il enferme en lui le cycle de la violence, est non-acceptable dans la societe de cette ville.
