The feminisation of the professions raises many theoretical and social issues. This thesis is based on the idea that the entry of women into the professions of physician, solicitor and architect in France is part of a dynamic process of social change affecting gender relations, both in the private sphere and in employment. Contrary to the idea of a drop in status of the occupational groups concerned, the feminisation process is shown to introduce a new "partial gender configuration". Beyond the internal gender segregation, this configuration can be seen both in a redefinition of the ethos of the professions and in a democratisation of gender relations. The modification of the professional practice of men and women in turn implies structural changes within the professions, reflected in the adoption of new forms of work organisation and of working-time patterns.

La féminisation des professions renvoie à de multiples enjeux théoriques et sociaux. Cette thèse défend l'idée selon laquelle l'arrivée des femmes dans les professions de médecin, d'avocat et d'architecte en France s'inscrit dans une dynamique de changement social affectant les rapports hommes/femmes, aussi bien dans la sphère privée qu'au travail. Loin d'impliquer une simple "dévalorisation" de ces métiers, la féminisation des professions libérales inaugure l'émergence d'une "configuration partielle de genre". Au-delà d'une ségrégation interne des professions selon le sexe, cette reconfiguration s'appréhende dans une redéfinition de l'ethos de l'exercice libéral et dans une démocratisation des rapports sociaux de sexe. L'inflexion des pratiques professionnelles des hommes et des femmes alimente en retour un mouvement de transformation structurelle des professions, qui se reflète dans l'adoption de nouvelles formes d'organisation du travail et des temporalités professionnelles.
