Rightly or wrongly, appeal to the notion of identity in many different types of theoretical discourse -- political, scientific, religious, regional or arstitic - has become common practice today. In the field of sociology, after first being considered irrelevant, only to become viewed subsequently as one possible founding principle of a new and inspiring set of problems, the concept of identity still has no theoretical status, nor does it correspond to any empirical reality. It is still in the project stage. This dissertation seeks first to review the different conceptions of identity prevailing today in the social sciences, then to construct sociology of identity by testing a method of sociosemiotic analysis, based of the peircian theory of sign, of a number of identity-fouding features - migration, craft industry, and social movement - observed in a region of mexico that is still inhabited by indians : meseta purepecha.

Abstract FR:

A tort ou a raison, la reference a la notion d'identite est devenue aujourd'hui omnipresente dans toute sorte de discours : politique, scientifique, social, religieux, regional ou artistique. En sociologie, d'abord releguee au rang de faux probleme, puis consideree comme au principe d'une problematique emergente et porteuse, la conception de l'identite ne correspond pourtant a aucune theorie et a aucune realite empirique. Elle reste un projet. Cette these se propose d'abord d'etablir un examen critique des conceptions de l'identite propre aux sciences sociales, pour ensuite construire une sociologie de l'identite, au moyen de l'experimentation d'une methode d'analyse sociosemiotique (fondee sur la theorie peircienne du signe) du fait identitaire observe (migration, artisanat et mouvement social) dans une region indienne du mexique d'aujourd'hui : la meseta purepecha.
