In morocco, trade-unionism has spearheaded the national liberation movement. In 1955, the nationalist movement spawned a national trade union, the union marocaine du travail (umt), which ever since its inception has remained the strongest national workers' union of the whole african continent. The two opposing tendencies of the moroccan national movement have each tried to direct the union according to its own line : the leftist tendency wanted it to take part in the struggle for national liberation, whereas the more conservative elements tried to use it as a regulator of social conflicts. The umt professes to be a democratic organization. Its proclaimed objective is to free the wage-earners from the managerial yoke, and to that aim it has been demanding the creation of a regime sympathetic to the working class. This study proposes to verify whether the union's strategy has been consistent with its declared aims, and whether it has really been able to embody the grievances of the moroccan working masses.

Le mouvement syndical marocain a ete le moteur de l'independance nationale. En 1955, le mouvement national cree une centrale syndicale, l'union marocaine du travail (umt). Celle-ci possede, des sa creation, une force numerique qui en fait la premiere centrale de tout le continent africain. Les deux tendances du mouvement national marocain ont voulu assigner au syndicat des orientations conformes a leurs lignes respectives : la tendance progressiste veut qu'il s'engage dans la lutte pour l'emancipation nationale; la tendance conservatrice veut en faire un regulateur des conflits sociaux. L'umt se presente comme une organisation syndicale democratique. Elle s'est fixe pour objectif de liberer les salaries du joug patronal, et place donc en tete de ses revendications l'instauration d'un regime favorable aux travailleurs. Notre etude se propose de verifier si la strategie de lutte adoptee par l'umt repond reellement a cet objectif et si elle est reellement parvenue a faire echo aux aspirations des travailleurs marocains.
