Les immigrés dans l'habitat français : le cas des Congolais

This research explores the problem of living in a habitat in a culture different to one's own, although one held in high esteem. The aim was to understand how congolese immigrants adapt to the french habitat, by observing and analysing the residential practices of the study population. We asked whether the type of construction acts as a constraint, leading the immigrants to abandon former practices, or whether, on the contrary, they respond to possible architectural constraints specific to this type of habitat by reorganizing it to swit their needs. We asked how, in everyday life, does the relationship between this habitat and the many practices generated by social models, differing from those for whom this habitat was designed reveal itself. It was found that, in terms of adaptation, it was not sufficient merely to state that, for example, the furniture in the living room resembled that found in a french home in the same type of habitat. We needed to be swe that the symbolic meaning of the way in which they occupy this habitat is identical. The significance derived from our observations revealed the complexity of the problem and showed that practices are closely linked with other aspects of daily life, notably family relationships, sociability and social identity.

Le présent travail s'interroge sur le problème d'habiter un type d'habitat dans une autre culture, au demeurant valorisée. Il s'agit de comprendre, à travers l'observation et l'analyse des pratiques des occupants, comment s'opère l'adaptation des immigrés congolais à l'habitat français. L'espace bâti constitue-t-il une contrainte qui les amène à abandonner leurs pratiques antérieures ? Ou au contraire répondent-ils aux éventuelles contraintes architecturales et spécifiques de cet habitat en le réorganisant à leur manière ? Comment se manifeste quotidiennement la relation entre l'habitat et l'ensemble des pratiques engendrées par des modèles sociaux différents de ceux pour qui l'habitat a été conçu? Il est apparu qu'il ne suffisait pas, pour parler d'adaptation, de constater que le mobilier équipant le séjour était semblable à celui que l'on trouve dans une famille française résidant dans le même type d'habitat. Fallait-il être sûr que le système "pratico-symbolique" de l'habiter était identique. La signification qui se dégage des faits observés met en évidence la complexité du problème et montre que la pratique de l'habitat est étroitement associée aux autres aspects de la vie quotidienne, notamment les relations de parenté, celles de sociabilité ou d'identité sociale.
