Though it leans on centuries of tradition and experience, the craftsmen was strongly shaken towards the end of XIXth century by unprecedented technical changes (the appearance of new materials, electricity as driving force in industry, new machines and improvement of working tools, other forms of work organization). Those technical changes modified the exercise of companionic trades. Promised with an unquestionable disappearance at the beginning of the XXth century, the craftsmen managed to resist the threat, by adapting to changes thanks to the maintenance of its traditional values: as well professional as morals. Thanks to their dynamism, their efforts for gathering, their capacity to make coexist the tradition and modernity, their professional training action and the organization of the voyage suggested with youth in France and throughout the world, the craftsmen adapted themselves to society evolution, in work and trades world.

Bien qu'il s'appuie sur des siècles de tradition et d'expérience, le compagnonnage a été ébranlé vers la fin du XIXe siècle par des changements techniques sans précédent (l'apparition de nouveaux matériaux, l'électricité comme force motrice dans l'industrie, de nouvelles machines et le perfectionnement des outils de travail, d'autres formes d'organisation du travail). Ces changements techniques ont modifiés l'exercice des métiers compagnonniques. Promis à une disparition certaine au début du XXe siècle, le compagnonnage est parvenu à résister à la menace, en s'adaptant aux changements grâce au maintien de ses valeurs traditionnelles, tant professionnelles que morales. Grâce à son dynamisme, ses efforts de rassemblement, sa capacité à faire coexister la tradition et la modernité, ses actions de formations professionnelles et l'organisation du voyage proposé à la jeunesse en France et à travers le monde, le compagnonnage s'est adapté à l'évolution de la société, au monde du travail et des métiers.
