The object of this study is the evolution in an American community of social structures and of the relationships to the environment. It brings together various scientific studies of the same location spanning a period of half a century, from those carried out jointly by the anthropologists Galvão and Wagley in 1948 to the one undertaken by the author. The resulting monograph aims especially to identify the place given to the religious field in the cohesiveness of the traditional system of domination through patronage and in the modalities of social restructuration arising from it. The dynamic between the relationships people have amongst themselves and their relationship to the environment is examined through the recurring cycles of production as well as in relation to interventions made in the name of development, whether in a logic of productivism or in a reaction aimed at preserving the future of populations and that of the eco-system.

La recherche a pour objet l'évolution des structures sociales et des rapports à l'environnement au sein d'une collectivité amazonienne. Elle met en parallèle, à un demi-siècle de distance, diverses études scientifiques d'un même lieu, de celles conjointes des anthropologues Galvão et Wagley en 1948 à celle effectuée par l'auteur. La monographie qui en résulte s'attache notamment à identifier la place accordée au champ religieux dans la cohésion du système traditionnel de domination patronale et dans les modalités de restructuration sociale qui lui font suite. La dualité des relations que les hommes ont entre eux et des rapports qu'ils entretiennent avec leur environnement est examinée au long des cycles de production qui se succèdent, ainsi qu'au regard des interventions pratiquées au nom du développement selon des logiques productivistes ou dans un sursaut visant à préserver devenir des populations et devenir du milieu.
