The ewes defined the personality like an entity that cannot be described. The "se" is always existing. Before the birth of man he lived in the divine city; on earth, he's only on holidays ; after death, he returns above with the power of manifesting as he wants in the postmortel apparitions. Death, for the ewes shows the end of first stage of life, that of terrestrial existence. It consists an act accomplished by individual to return according to a programme which was already established, elaborated by himself, and approved by divine city at above.

Les Ewé définissent la personnalité comme une entité qui s'inscrit hors du temps. Le "se" a toujours existe. Avant la naissance de l'homme, il vivait dans la cite divine ; sur terre, il est simplement en vacances ; après la mort, il retourne dans l'au-delà avec pouvoir de continuer de se manifester a sa guise, dans des apparitions posthumes. La mort, pour les Ewé, marque la fin d'une étape de la vie, celle de l'existence terrestre. Elle constitue un acte accompli par l'individu pour retourner, selon un programme préétabli, élabore par lui, et approuve depuis la cite divine, dans l'au-delà.
