Approche sociologique complexe du charisme : Le Mouvement Raëlien et son prophète

Proceeding from the example of rael, prophet of the raelian movement, and - on a theoretical level - based on a complex approach to social reality (perceived as polarised energies and evolving by contradiction and conflict), the thesis shows that charisma is a phenomenon implied in embedded determinations, putting into play : the personal qualities of the charisma bearer and the expectations of his followers and of his detractors (link to their individual history) ; social circumstances, power logistics and relations of domination (in relation to a collective history and cultural traditions). In the particular example of rael, the thesis emphasises the importance of ideological mystification ; a symbolical systeme rooted in the collective unconscious and participating in the organising dynamics of life ; the charismatic person, considered sacred by his followers, assumes the symbolic figure of the messiah. This ambivalent figure, the expression of the archetype of the reciprocal passage from order to disorder, intervenes on the individual level, in a psychological structuring of the personality, and as a factor of social cohesion through its integration into political and religious myth. For those who believe in him, it makes the charisma bearer a symbolic mediator and a social intermediary. In a contradictory manner, rael thus appears both as a trickster drawing his adepts into a totalitarian situation and a visionary bringing to light the hidden aspirations of the western imagination while caricaturising them.

A partir de l'exemple de rael, prophete du mouvement raelien, et se fondant, au plan theorique, sur l'approche complexe de la realite sociale (envisagee comme energetiquement polarisee et evoluant dans la contradiction et le conflit), la these montre que le charisme est un phenomene implique dans un emboitement de determinations mettant en jeu : - des qualites personnelles du porteur de charisme et des attentes de ses partisans et de ses detracteurs (liees a leur histoire individuelle) - ; des circonstances sociales, des logiques de pouvoir et des rapports de domination (en relation avec une histoire collective et des traditions culturelles). Dans l'exemple particulier de rael, la these met en avant l'importance de la mystification ideologique ; - un systeme symbolique qui s'enracine dans l'inconscient collectif et participe des dynamismes organisateurs du vivant : la personne charismatique, sacralisee par ses partisans, est porteuse de la figure symbolique du messie. Cette figure ambivalente, expression de l'archetype du passage reciproque de l'ordre au desordre, intervient sur le plan individuel, dans la structuration psychologique de la personnalite, et comme facteur de cohesion sociale par son integration a des mythes politiques ou religieux. Pour ceux qui croient en lui, elle fait du porteur de charisme un mediateur symbolique et un passeur social. Rael apparaitra donc contradictoirement a la fois comme un mystificateur entrainant ses adeptes dans une aventure totalitaire et comme un visionnaire portant a jour en les caricaturant des aspirations souterrainement presentes dans l'imaginaire occidental
