This inquiry provides a general framework for a sociological analysis of situations of exile. It focuses on the case study of French refugee intellectuals who fled to the United States during the Second World War. Archival research in both countries made it possible to reconstruct the transnational networks of emigration and the emerging and fragile institutional setting of the exiles. A biographical database of these refugees was built. Their social characteristics are thus systematically related with the diverse and successive experiences of exile, from the flight to a possible return home. Three types of exiles have been isolated : the patriot; the suicidal; the cosmopolitan. The respective weight of these figures in the professional fields of exiles enables us to explain the form social invesments takes during the crisis, the political orientation of the refugee intellectuals and the overall rupture of the emigration with its country of origin.

Cette enquête offre un cadre général d'analyse sociologique des situations d'exil, à partir du cas des intellectuels français réfugiés aux Etats-Unis pendant la Deuxième guerre mondiale. Un travail d'archives conduit dans les deux pays a permis de reconstituer les réseaux transnationaux de la fuite et l'univers institutionnel émergent dans l'émigration. On a aussi construit une base de données biographiques sur les réfugiés, centrée sur les mondes littéraires et universitaires. Sont mises systématiquement en relation les diverses propriétés sociales des protagonistes avec les épreuves successives de l'exil, du départ au retour éventuel. Trois figures d'exilés sont isolées ainsi que les trajectoires sociales qui y prédestinent : le patriote; le "suicidé de la société"; le cosmopolite. Leur poids respectif dans les différents champs de l'exil permet d'expliquer les investissements sociaux de l'émigration, ses engagements politiques et le degré de rupture avec le pays d'origine.
