The present thesis deals with the social relationships young people living in suburban areas have between theym or with the other people they meet : others dwellers, dwellers of others residential areas or representatives of territorial or national institutions. Therefore, the purpose is not only to describe the sociabilities of the suburban young people but also to explain what binds theym to the global society through perceptions and actual experiences, and to describe the nature of the social bond which ties young people to others members of french society. The specific place suburban young people have in the social classification builded at the level of the global society governs their conceptions of their social relations. That place creates a "community of experience", a group of common practices and perceptions which unite the young people living the same experiences in the same category, empirically defined by the young people theymselves. Most of the data has come from investigations of about ten different sites and gathered from participatory observations. They have been completed by extensives interviews. More than one hundred people have been met in four years of fieldwork. The data allows one to understand how the social relationships of the young suburban people are organized, between children and parents, between girls and boys, between age-sets, in the groups of young people, between young people and others dwellers of the block, between young people and representatives of the departmental and national institutions like teachers, policemen and social workers, and how distances are created between groups and categories in the french society.

La presente these porte sur les relations sociales que les jeunes vivant en cite hlm dans les communes de la banlieue parisienne entretiennent a la fois entre eux et avec les autres personnes qu'ils peuvent rencontrer, qu'il s'agisse d'autres habitants des cites, d'habitants d'autres zones residentielles ou de representante d'institutions territoriales et nationales. Il ne s'agit donc pas d'examiner seulement les sociabilites des jeunes de cite, mais aussi d'essayer de comprendre ce qui les rattache a la societe globale a travers des representations et des vecus, c'est-a-dire de decrire la nature du lien social qui relie jeunes de banlieue et autres membres de la societe francaise. La position specifique qu'occupent les "jeunes de banlieue" dans le classement social empirique bati au niveau de la societe globale conditionne en partie leur facon de concevoir les relations sociales. De cette position nait une "communaute d'experience", ensemble de representations, de pratiques communes et d'experiences relationnelles qui reunit les jeunes dans une categorie souple et ouverte, definie de maniere empirique par les acteurs eux-memes. Les donnees provenant de quatre enquetes realisees sur une dizaine de cites differentes ont ete recueillies pour la plupart lors d'enquetes de type ethnologique et notamment d'observations participantes. Elles ont ete completees par des entretiens approfondis. Plus de cent personnes ont ete rencontrees en l'espace de quatre ans de terrain. L'analyse de ces donnees permet de comprendre comment s'organisent les relations sociales des jeunes, entre parents et enfants, entre garcons et filles, entre classes d'age, dans les groupes de jeunes, entre jeunes et autres habitants des cites, entre jeunes et representants des institutions departementales (assistantes sociales, educateurs) ou nationales (policiers, enseignants) et comment se creent des distances entre groupes et categories dans la societe francaise.
