La modernite interrogee par la tradition : adaptation et portee critique du vieil ordre amish de pennsylvanie face au monde moderne

The old order amish, established in the usa, sees itself as the heir of the orthodox line of the amish movement, an off-shoot of anabaptism, itself a product of the swiss reformation. The members practise adult baptism, refuse to take oaths or to take up arms, and observe a specific rule of conduct, the ordnung. They form congregations and feel called to conform to christ's teachings in the bible, and to separate from the world. As a non-conforming minority devoted to agricultural activities, the old order finds its development hindered by american urbanization and industrialization. Increasing contacts with the outside put in question the community's ability to redefine its physical, ideological and symbolic boundaries with the world. The amish tradition is undergoing an intense process of rewriting of its parameters, showing that the dialectics of separation is primarily a relationship with the world. In a pluralistic society, even a deliberately marginal community cannot avoid negotiating its non-conformism with the outside. This negotiation is a dialogue between tradition and modernity which reveals how the old order is adapting to the modem world. It opens onto a critical reading of modernity which in some ways echoes postmodern criticism. My study of the old order led me in 1990 to pennsylvania, where the context imposed a tactics of participatory observation. The everyday life of the families i met made me grasp the tensions between the ordnung's ideal +amish way; and the members' concrete reality. My remarks fall into three parts, dealing with the community's living conditions, with social cohesion and with the relationship between members' religious duties and economic needs. I invoke the anthropological detour to stress the modernity of the amish tradition's dynamics, and to show how this tradition permits an analysis of the features and implications of today's modernity, while reacting to the dialogue established with the actors of modem america.

Implante aux usa, le vieil ordre amish se concoit comme l'heritier de l'orthodoxie du mouvement amish issu de l'anabaptisme ne lors de la reforme suisse. Les adeptes pratiquent le bapteme des adultes, refusent de preter serment, de porter les armes et observent une regle de conduite specifique, l'ordnung. Ils forment des congregations, se sentent appeles a suivre les enseignements du christ et a vivre separes du monde. Minorite non-conformiste de vocation agricole, le vieil ordre est entrave par l'urbanisation et l'industrialisation americaines. La multiplication des contacts avec l'exterieur interroge la capacite du groupe a redefinir des limites physiques, ideologiques et symboliques avec le monde. La tradition amish connait une dynamique intense de refection de ses parametres montrant que la dialectique de la separation est en premier lieu un rapport au monde. Meme une communaute qui se veut en marge ne peut dans une societe pluraliste s'abstenir de negocier son non-conformisme avec l'exterieur. Cette negociation traduit un dialogue entre la tradition et la modernite qui temoigne de l'adaptation du vieil ordre face au monde moderne et ouvre sur une lecture critique de la modernite rejoignant a certains egards les critiques postmodernes. L'etude du vieil ordre nous a conduite en 1990 en pennsylvanie. Amenee a privilegier l'observation participante, c'est dans le quotidien des familles qui nous accueillirent que nous avons saisi les tensions entre "l'etre amish" ideal de l'0rdnung et la realite empirique des adeptes. Organisees en trois parties traitant du cadre de vie amish, de la cohesion sociale et de l'articulation entre devoirs religieux et necessites economiques des fideles, nos perspectives, attachees au detour anthropologique, soulignent la modernite de la dynamique de la tradition amish et montrent comment cette derniere est un analyseur de la modernite presente tout en etant travaillee par le dialogue etabli avec les acteurs du monde moderne americain.
