The thesis examines evolving work practices and their future in the car service workshops; it does this by comparing “vernacular” words about work and the “work/procedural based” speech at the work that has come about due to changes in work practice. The detailed appraisal of both workplace-engendered speech and speech about work derived from personal biographic interviews saw the emergence of distinct forms of expression according to technical advances on the one hand and workplace generational differences on the other. These different ways of workplace speech were considered under three recognised themes : technological changes in the workplace, the customer and type of service provided, the training of the mechanics. If the study does not confirm the existence of a new workplace culture that is in sharp contrast to the traditional ways, it nevertheless reveals that the new work paradigms have given rise to numerous divisions within the workshops.

La thèse interroge l’évolution du travail et son avenir dans les ateliers de la maintenance automobile par la confrontation de paroles « indigènes » autour du travail avec la « vulgate » constituée par les discours institués sur les mutations. L’analyse approfondie de paroles émises en situation de travail et de paroles sur le travail produites en situation d’entretiens biographiques fait émerger des formes de verbalisation du travail distinctes selon les évolutions techniques et les générations. Ces différentes manières de parler le travail sont mises en perspective avec trois thématiques autour desquelles se structure le discours établi : les évolutions technologiques, le client et la relation de service, la formation des mécaniciens. Si la confrontation remet en cause l’existence d’un nouveau mode de travail en totale rupture avec les formes traditionnelles d’exercice de l’activité, elle révèle, au sein des ateliers, divers clivages suscités par la nouvelle définition du métier.
