The Office and the Telescope: A historical Sociology of French Astronomy, 1900-1940. This dissertation studies the establishment of French astronomy between 1900 and 1940. The two first parts analyze the process by which a socio-institutional field of state observatories emerged in the French system of higher education under the Third Republic. The study identifies a specific way of doing astronomy, which is characterized by the development of a scientific-bureaucratic regime and a process of nationalization. The third part deals with the transformation of the field in the Interwar Period. The last part of the dissertation examines the simultaneous development of amateur astronomy conceived as a “duplication” of professional astronomy. In doing so, this dissertation aims to contribute to the historical sociology of science.

Ce travail met au jour la structuration de l’astronomie française de 1900 à 1940. Les deux premières parties proposent une approche de la formation d’un champ socioinstitutionnel composé d’une dizaine d’observatoires d’État ; l’enjeu est d’en saisir la singularité dans l’enseignement supérieur français sous la Belle Époque. À travers notamment la nationalisation et l’orientation du travail astronomique selon un régime d’activité scientifico-bureaucratique, l’enquête identifie les spécificités d’une certaine façon de faire science. La troisième partie analyse les transformations du champ dans les années 1920-1940. Ne se limitant pas à ce seul champ, le travail consacre une dernière partie à l’étude de la formation simultanée de l’astronomie amateur en tant que "double" de l’astronomie professionnelle. Il entend ainsi contribuer à la sociologie historique des sciences.
