Les urbanistes : un groupe professionnel en voie de constitution

The object of this research is to study the dynamic professionalization of town planners. With the use of a survey per interview and the analysis of professional associations' archives, the study exposes the process of the creation and transformation of the professional group. Historical study shows the birth of the professional town planners' activity and the struggles between many professional groups to appropriate it. The town planner group is very heterogeneous and not very defined. The problems of social and legal recognition lead professional associations, at their creation, to organize and defend the profession. Finally we will show how the group of planners cannot correspond to the model of profession and thus will not achieve its' professionalization. It can more easily be defined as an emerging occupation that replies to new needs in society.

Ce travail de recherche a pour objet la dynamique de professionnalisation du groupe des urbanistes. Au moyen d'une enquête par entretiens et de l'analyse d'archives des associations professionnelles, l'étude met en évidence le processus de création et de transformation de ce groupe professionnel. L'étude historique montre la naissance de l'activité professionnelle d'urbanisme et les luttes entre plusieurs groupes professionnels pour se l'approprier. Le groupe des urbanistes est très hétérogène et peu défini. Ses problèmes de reconnaissance sociale et juridique conduisent à la création d'associations professionnelles pour organiser et défendre la profession. Au final, nous montrons que le groupe des urbanistes ne peut correspondre au modèle des professions établies et n'achèvera pas sa professionnalisation. Il peut davantage se définir comme un métier émergent qui répond à de nouveaux besoins de société.
