A committed work ? Inquiry of the organic truck farmers in the Alpes-Maritimes. This thesis relies on an ethnographical investigation led within a departmental space of organic truck farms. At the crossroads of the economic sociology of independent workers and the sociology of activist commitment, it deals with biographical pathways and professional and militant practices of truck farmers who label their products as organic. First of all, and after an original historic lighting of the constitution of the organic local movement, the research focuses on the individual determiners of the compliance to the organic methods. This first time of the analysis questions the binary speeches which set the organic farmers with "pure" intentions against those who act "by interest". The research is then interested in the conditions in which the professional ethos of organic truck farmers fits with the militant practices encouraged by the movement, and leads these farmers to think of their work as a commitment for a cause. It proposes to this end a typology of the various ways of being an organic farmer, then attempts to show the reversibility of these professional commitments of a particular kind, mobilizing family companies and not individuals. Finally, the thesis examines the modalities and the effect of the collective action of organic farmers in the social and professional space, and allows to shed light on the contemporary transformations of the organic movement, in a context of institutionalization of the cause. In the end, by mobilizing three different scales of analysis, the individual pathway, the family company, and the militant collective, this work brings to light the social conditions, the modalities and the individual and collective effects of a committed work.

Cette thèse s'appuie sur une enquête ethnographique menée au sein d'un espace départemental d'exploitations agricoles en maraîchage biologique. En croisant les apports de la sociologie économique du travail indépendant et ceux de la sociologie de l'engagement militant, elle prend pour objet les parcours biographiques et les pratiques professionnelles et militantes des maraîchers qui font certifier leur production agricole par le label « Agriculture Biologique ». En premier lieu, et après un éclairage historique original de la constitution du mouvement agrobiologique local, c'est la question des déterminants individuels de l'adhésion au cahier des charges de l'agriculture biologique qui est posée, et examinée à travers l'étude des parcours biographiques des agriculteurs enquêtes. Ce premier temps de l'analyse remet en cause les discours binaires qui opposent les agriculteurs biologiques aux intentions « pures », à ceux qui agissent « par intérêt ». La recherche s'intéresse ensuite aux conditions dans lesquelles l'éthos professionnel des maraîchers biologiques s'accorde avec les pratiques militantes encouragées par le mouvement, et conduit ces agriculteurs à penser leur métier comme un engagement au service d'une cause. Elle propose pour ce faire une typologie des différentes manières d'être agriculteur biologique, puis s'attache à montrer la réversibilité de ces engagements professionnels d'un genre particulier, qui mobilisent des entreprises familiales et non des personnes singulières. Enfin, la thèse examine les modalités et les effets de l'action collective des agriculteurs biologiques dans l'espace social et professionnel considéré, et permet de faire la lumière sur les mutations contemporaines du mouvement agrobiologique, dans un contexte d'institutionnalisation de la cause. Au final, en mobilisant trois échelles d'analyse différentes, le parcours individuel, l'entreprise familiale, et le collectif militant, ce travail met au jour les conditions sociales, les modalités et les effets individuels et collectifs d'un engagement par le travail.
