This thesis presnets a theoretical section and an empirical section: the theoretical section first deals with the relationship between the spoken and the written chinese language : a study is next made of what is expressed in chinese writting. Wheter the characters are manual or mimetic they have the value of symbols. The problems of the development of the language and particularly of the learning of reading and writting are then analysed. The empirical section is about the reading and writing by young children of certain chinese characters: their family names and given names, some words freely chosen by the children, and words from their environment. Following that is a description of tests carried out and an analysis of the results obtained with children in taiwan, of the 3 to 6 years age group and with chinese children living in paris. All the children took the same tests. It is of great interest to observe in detail the evolution in these children of the ability to read and write.

Cette these presente une partie theorique et une partie empirique: dans la premiere, sont traites les rapports entre la langue chinoise parlee et ecrite. Puis sont etudies les gestes exprimes par l'ecriture chinoise; qu'ils soient manuels ou mimetiques : ils ont valeur de symboles. Les problemes du developpement du langage et notamment de l'apprentissage de la lecture et de l'ecriture sont ensuite analyses. La partie empirique porte sur la lecture et l'ecriture par les jeunes enfants de certains caracteres chinois: leurs noms et prenoms, des mots librement choisis par l'enfant, et des mots environnementaux. Suivent la description des epreuves realisees et l'analyse des resultats obtenus aupres des enfants de taiwan, dans la tranche d'age de 3 a 6 ans, et aupres des enfants chinois vivant a paris. Tous les enfants ont passe les memes epreuves. Il est tout a fait interessant d'observer dans le detail l'evolution de la lecture et de l'ecriture chez ces enfants.
