Witchcraft is neither a matter of psychosis nor of neurosis. It is a belief. It belongs to the cultural material of a society and registers itself therefore in the social imaginary. Notwithstanding this, a psychotic or a neurotic could use this material, the psychotic in his delirium and the neurotic in sorting out his conflicts. The material collected during a field study in a valley of the Cantabria region allows us to state that witchcraft is the only way for the inhabitants to express their conflicts and so their suffering but at the same time they express the causes provided that the misfortunes are repeated. If there is no repetition, they will find a rational explanation. These conflicts, generally, belong to three apparently different worlds. 1- Personal sufferings which could be physical or psychological. 2- Animal illnesses. 3- Professional or economic problems. Witchcraft allows us to link the conflicts and to integrate themes into the same system.

La sorcellerie ne relève ni de la psychose ni de la névrose. C'est une croyance. Elle fait partie du matériel culturel d'une société et s'inscrit donc dans l'imaginaire social. Nonobstant, un psychotique ou une névrose peut utiliser ce matériel, l'un dans l'organisation de son délire et l'autre dans l'aménagement de ses conflits. Le matériel recueilli sur le terrain dans une vallée de la région cantabrique nous permet de constater que la sorcellerie est le seul moyen dont disposent ses habitants pour exprimer leurs conflits et donc leurs souffrances mais aussi d'en expliquer la cause, ceci à condition que les malheurs se répètent. S'il n'y a pas de répétition, ils trouvent une explication rationnelle. Ces conflits, en général, appartiennent à trois univers apparemment différents. Ainsi, les ensorcelles expriment dans le langage de la sorcellerie: 1- Des atteintes personnelles physiques ou psychiques. 2- Des maladies d'animaux. 3- Des problèmes professionnels ou économiques. La sorcellerie permet de lier les conflits et de les intégrer dans un même système.
