Freud discussed the problematic of money from both the perspective of its unconscious symbolic value and from that of the function of payment in the treatment. The question, in order to be properly appreciated, must be seen in the light of the whole of freudian theory, especially the second topic ; once it is linked to the theory of the development of the ego, a synthesis of the two different perspectives examined by freud becomes possible. This approach implies an investigation of the quality of the work of representation and the various modes of symbol formation which result from it. Looked at in this way, money appears as a support onto which different categories of unconscious representation may be projected. Its symbolic value varies along a continuum ranging from the primary object to the genital partial object. It is nonetheless the representations of the genital partial object formed via the castration complex, differences in generation and the complementarity of the sexes which underlies money's function as a medium of exchange. Freud a traite la problematique de l'argent sous l'angle de sa valeur symbolique inconsciente ainsi que du point de vue de la fonction du paiement dans la cure. La question prend tout son relief d'etre saisie a partir de l'ensemble de la theorie freudienne, notamment de la deuxieme topique ; situee par rapport a la theorie du developpement du moi, la synthese entre les deux aspects examines par freud devient possible. Cette approche implique que l'on s'interroge sur la qualite du travail de representation et sur les divers modes de formation de symboles qui en sont issus. Dans cette perspective l'argent apparait comme un support sur lequel peuvent se projeter differentes categories de representations inconscientes. Sa valeur symbolique peut varier sur un continuum qui va de l'objet primaire a l'objet partiel genital. Ce sont cependant les representations d'objet partiel genital formees a partir du complexe de castration, de la difference de generation et de la complementarite de sexes qui sous-tendent sa fonction de moyen d'echange. Ainsi l'aptitude a une symbolisation riche et ouverte determine la possibilite d'accorder a l'argent une valeur symbolique limitee ; de s'en servir comme d'un signe ferme et arbitraire en conformite avec sa fonction dans l'usage social.
