Abstract EN:
Viennese-born bruno bettelheim, a jew, emigrates to the united states after having spent some time in nazi concentration camps, and settles as a psychoanalyst. On the clinical level, he is extremely influenced by his experience as a prisoner in dachau and buchenwald. In the american environment, he will make use of the various american interpretations of freud's theories ; he will, therefore, criticize psychoanalysis, which he will see as an insufficient theory to be developed and completed. In the end of his life, however, he will "come back" to freud. He was well-known for his remarkable empathy and the precision of his diagnoses, but he remained an empirical practitioner of psychoanalysis, theory being his weak point.
