The symbol represented by the father has to present in the psychological life of his daughter, just to avoid that the daughter will fall down in psychosis. What is important is not so much to have a real father but to have a symbolic one. Having a symbolic father requires two conditions : the presence and the speech of the mother as well as the function of the father.

Le père est un symbole et une représentation qui doit s'inscrire dans la vie psychique de sa fille. Il ne suffit pas d'avoir un père réel pour que la fille échappe à la psychose, mais le fait d'avoir un père symbolique la fait accéder à l'équilibre mental. Pour avoir un père symbolique deux conditions sont nécessaires : la parole de la mère et la fonction du père.
