The thesis examines seven of anita brookner's fourteen novels (at the time of writing). Only those novels featuring a solitary female heroine were chosen. It is divided into two parts. The first part offers a thematic and structural study, in which the novels are examined chronologically. The themes which appear consistantly are those of food, exile, alienation, the role of the solitary woman and, finally, the obsession that there exists one law for the beautiful - the spoilt who get their own way - and another one for the plain but morally just. The structural analysis reveals the consistant use of opposition in all the novels, the use of literary sub-text in the carlier novels, shifting to pictoral/iconographic sub-text in the later ones, and finally, the use of inter-textuality. The chronological approach reveals a shift in the author's own perceptions: over the years, the bland but moral heroine is met with increasingly less favour, whilst the beautiful <hedonist> is less reviled. The second part of the thesis uses the tools of psychoanalysis in order to gain some insight into the author's unconscious desires. The discernable shift in the author's attitudes toward the opposition between the <plain> and the <beautiful> is accounted for by examining the subject's relation to the psychological objects confronting her. It is revealed that there is a movement whereby the subject,who considers herself at first to be confronted by 'good' or 'bad' objects, succeeds in attaining a state of ambivalence in which both the 'good' and the 'bad' object are accepted and assimilated into the psyche. Since food was also a very important theme in the first part, the numerous instances of orality in the novels are analysed in the second part. The unconsious desire for fusion with the maternal breast is exposed, namely, the subject's desire to return to a state of wholeness and unity with the mother. The protagonists are examined in terms of their oral character, and signs of evolution within this framework are looked for.

La these est une etude de sept des quatorze romans ecrits par anita brookner. Seuls les romans avec une protagoniste solitaire etaient choisis. La these est divisee en deux parties. La premiere partie offre une etude thematique et structurelle, dans laquelle les romans sont etudies de facon chronologique. Parmi les themes qui apparaissent regulierement sont la nourriture, l'exil, l'alienation, le role de la femme solitaire et l'obsession avec le fait qu'il existe une loi pour les <beaux> - ceux qui sont gates et a qui tout est accorde - et une autre loi pour les personnages <moins attirants> mais tres morals et vertueux. L'analyse structurelle montre l'utilisation systematique de l'opposition dans les romans, l'utilisation d'un autre support litteraire dans les premiers romans, et l'utilisation d'un support iconographique dans les derniers. Finalement, nous soulignons l'usage de l'intertextualite. Une approche chronologique revele un mouvement dans les discernements de l'auteur elle-meme : pendant les annees d'ecriture, l'heroine <ordinaire> et vertueuse semblerait etre remplacee dans l'estime de l'auteur par les hedonistes. La deuxieme partie de la these utilise les outils psychanalytiques pour acceder aux desirs inconscients du sujet-ecrivant. Le deplacement de la position de l'auteur en ce qui concerne les <beaux> et ceux qui le sont moins est explique par une analyse de la relation du sujet aux objets psychiques en face d'elle. Bien que dans les premiers roman on distingue tres clairement des <bons> objets et des <mauvais> objets, un mouvement est decerne ou le sujet arrive a acceder a une ambivalence ou les <bons> et les <mauvais> objets sont acceptes et assimiles dans le psychisme. Puisque la nourriture etait un theme-cle dans la premiere partie, les nombreux exemples de l'oralite dans les romans sont analyses dans la deuxieme partie. Le desir inconscient d'un etat de fusion avec le sein maternel est montre - c'est-a-dire, le desir du sujet-ecrivant d'un retour a un etat de non-coupure. Les protagonistes sont analysees en ce qui concerne leur caractere oral, et pour une eventuelle evolution dans les stades de ce caractere.
