We present an analytical and descriptive study of french-african military relations from the beginning of the nineteen sixties. We try to reply to a series of questions : (a) what are the basis and the modalities of military engagements in africa? (b) On what grounds did the political leaders elaborate their policies? (c) How did the principal actors and public opinion assess military initiatives? We concentrate our attention on four major themes: 1) historical heritage: what was the state of military relations on the advent of independence? What were the stakes? We present: (a) a historical overview. (b) The organisation of african armies. 2) Military means: we treat (a) military cooperation. (b) french military network in africa. (c) Intervention forces. (d) Secret services. 3) Balance sheet of open and clandestine interventions: we draw up a balance sheet of military operations. (a) charles de gaulle (algeria, gabon, nigeria, tchad. . . ). (b) valery giscard d'estaing (western sahara, zaire, central africa, tchad). (c) francois mitterand (togo, tchad. . . ). Who are the friends and the ennemies? What are the objectives, the means, the limits. . . Of military initiatives? 4) Determinants of the interventions: we analyse the determinants of military relations.

Nous présentons une étude analytique et descriptive de l'ensemble des relations militaires franco-africaines du début des années soixante. Nous nous efforçons de répondre à une série de questions: (a) quels sont les fondements et les modalités des engagements militaires en Afrique? Quels sont les paramètres? (b) en quels termes a été élaboré la politique militaire par les dirigeants politiques? (c) en quels termes ont été perçues les initiatives militaires par les acteurs principaux et par l'opinion publique? Nous concentrons notre attention sur quatre volets majeurs: 1) héritage historique: quel est l’état des relations militaires a la veille de l’indépendance? Quels sont les enjeux? Nous présentons: (a) un aperçu historique (liens militaires avant l'expansion coloniale, soldats noirs africains: tirailleurs sénégalaise, conquête coloniale, deux guerres mondiales, héritage colonial. . . ). (b) l'organisation des armées africaines (répartition des troupes, nature et mission des armées nationales). 2) moyens militaires: nous traitons (a) la coopération militaire. (b) dispositif militaire français en Afrique. (c) forces d'intervention. (d) services secrets (moyens, mission, opérations, évolution. . . ). (3) bilan des interventions ouvertes et clandestines: nous dressons le bilan des actions militaires. (4) déterminants des interventions: nous analysons les déterminants.
