Les droits de l'homme en Egypte : le cas des coptes

The emergence of muslim fundamentalism in arab countries provides the background for the author's depiction of the situation of the coptic minority in egypt, a minority that represents one-quarter of egypt's population. Successors to the pharaoh's in this land, the copts have experienced invasions and all the difficulties of the occupation. The author relates the evolution of this nation, the history of the coptic church and that of its development against adversity. The author analyses the muslim concept of the nation and the attitude of the governing nation with respect to non muslim minorities. One finds in the thesis an analysis of different egyptian constitutions which make islam the official religion of the state. The thesis also looks at the role egypt plays in the international arena and examines international conventions relating to human rights and prohibition of religious discrimination, conventions which egypt signed, including the human rights declaration of the united nations. In conclusion the author formulates recommendations susceptible to insure the respect of basic human rights for the copts of egypt.

Devant la montee de l'integrisme musulman dans les pays arabes, l'auteur a voulu decrire la situation de la minorite cope en egypte, minorite qui represente le quart de la population de l'egypte. Successeurs des pharaons sur cette terre, les coptes ont connu tour a tour des invasions qui leur ont fait subir l'odieux de l'occupation. L'auteur relate l'evolution de cette nation, l'histoire de l'eglise copte et celle de son epanouissement malgre l'adversite. Il analyse la conception musulmane de la nation et l'attitude de la nation regnante a l'egard des minorites religieuses non-musulmanes. La these passe en revue les differentes constitutions egyptiennes qui consacrent l'islam comme religion officielle de l'etat. La these aborde aussi le role que joue l'egypte au sein du forum international et etudie les conventions qui traitent des droits de l'homme et de l'interdiction de toute discrimination fondee sur la religion, conventions auxquelles l'egypte a d'ailleurs adhere et dont la plus importante est la declaration universelle des droits de l'homme des nations-unies. Pour terminer, l'auteur formule des recommandations susceptibles d'assurer aux coptes d'egypte le respect de leurs droits humains les plus fondamentaux.
