The situation of theatre in Poland sheds light on the relationship between politics and culture in the context of political transition. This is illustrated by the political commitment of Polish actors in the 1980's and the structural changes that occured in Polish theatre after 1989. A historical appraisal looks at the institutional framework of the actor profession, the relations between theatre and politics, and the effects of cultural policy on both institutions and professionnal practices. The tense relation between theatre and politics varies historically according to how cultural and political actors make use or attribute meaning to this relationship. . .

Une analyse interne vise la structure de la profession théâtrale. S'il apparait a priori que les conditions internes étaient réunies pour considérer la profession de comédien comme consolidée (fonctionnement clos, structures d'autogestion et d'autocontrôle propres), disposant d'une identitité et d'une autonomie forte, les conditions extérieures, n'ont pas permis la réalisation de cette autonomie. Fondé sur une infrastructure technique et artistique institutionnalisée, le théâtre se caractérise par son insertion dans les structures économiques et politiques, il est historiquement, dépendant des principes de la politique culturelle de l'Etat. . .
