This thesis deals with the "proto-parties", a concept best defined as designating any form of partisan organization in the making and namely here in the context of societies in the proess of becoming democraties. The purport of this thesis focuses more precisely on the evolution of the structures of the republican movement in france under the second republic. Indeed, was the granting of universal suffrage in 1848 followed by a subsequent change in the partisan structures which had been formed by the republicans under the july monarchy or by the creation of other newer forms of organizations. This question will be dealt with by first undertaking an analysis of the organization of the republican movement under the july monarchy. This data will then be confronted with that concerning the structures existing under the second republic. Finally, a third part will be given to the sociology of the republican movement by means of a study of its electorate, its members, militants and officials.

Cette these s'inscrit dans le cadre des recherches menees sur les "proto-partis", concept que l'on peut definir comme toute forme d'organisation partisane en cours de constitution, notamment dans le contexte des societes en voie de democratisation. L'objet de la these porte plus precisement sur l'evolution des structures du mouvement republicain sous la deuxieme republique. En effet, l'avenement du suffrage universel en 1848 s'est-il accompagne de la mutation des structures partisanes qui avaient ete formees par les republicains sous la monarchie de juillet ou de la creation de types d'organisations jusqu'alors inedits? il est repondu a cette question en menant tout d'abord une analyse de l'organisation du mouvement republicain sous la monarchie de juillet, puis en procedant a une confrontation de ces premieres donnees a celles qui portent sur les formes structurelles de la deuxieme republique. Enfin, une troisieme partie est consacree a la sociologie du mouvement republicain, a travers l'etude de son electorat, de ses adherents, militants et cadres.
