Catholicism was introduced in korea in the eighteen century. At a time in which traditional conficianism was suffering from a certain lack of credibility stemming from the crisis which paralyzed the choseon dynasty, the new world vision offered by catholicism and valuable as much doctrinally as scientifically gained ground. Nevertheless, the establisghed regime proved quite resistant to the intrusion. The magnitude of successive repressions quickly condemned the young chruch to a handful of persecuted faithful. When french missionaries of the m. E. P. Went into action in the mineteenth century, the situation was not at all clear because of the imperialistic indertaking of japan. The silence with which the missionary church accepted the colonization of korea explains its lack of power. The country's independence, followed immediately by partition and civil war, futher clouds the situation. In order for the church to enter the political scene, it was necessary to wait for the advent of the regime termed "revitalization".

Le catholicisme a ete introduit en coree au xviii siecle. A l'epoque, le cadre traditionnel du confucianisme souffrait d'un certain discredit qui se trouvait a l'origine de la crise de dynastie choseon. La nouvelle vision du monde qu'offrait le catholicisme dans sa valeur tant doctrinale que scientifique a gagne du terrain. Mais cette premiere implantation s'est heurtee a des resistances de la part des confucianistes et une serie de repressions a bientot circonscrit l'influence de la jeune eglise a une poignee de fideles persecutes. Lorsque les missionnaires francais de la societe des missions etrangeres de paris ont repris le chemin de la coree au xixe siecle, la situation se trouvait embrouillee a cause de l'entreprise imperialiste du japon. Le silence dans lequel l'eglise missionnaire a accueilli la colonisation de la coree expliquait son impuissance. L'independance du pays, suivie immediatement par la partition et la guerre civile fratricide, n'a pas non plus permis de clarifier la situation. Pour que l'eglise fasse son entree sur la scene politique, il a fallu attendre l'avenement du regime dit "de revitalisation".
