The Inter-Organizational Network (ION), a point of convergence among several disciplines such as Economics, Organizational Sociology, Geography, as well as Management, has been the focus of several studies since the 1970s. There exist multiple acceptations around this interdisciplinary concept that are linked to very diverse theoretical trends. Despite this profusion of trends, most of the studies in management focus their attention on issues of demand of the ION. Few researches were interested in the organizational logics, however, it seems to constitute a main path to the understanding of their functioning. Our investigation is part of this field, and aims to study the management of the ION as a response to the search for competitiveness. Our thesis is divided into two parts. The first part puts forward a merger between the theoretical fields of competitiveness and the ION which have succeeded in a perspective of analysis of the competitiveness within an ION according to an organizational logic. We shall adapt this analysis to an IOR of the French ornamental tree nursery within its European frame of reference. The second part is empirical and mobilizes a multilevel qualitative approach of an IOR by embedded case study method. We will limit the field of our case study to an IOR of the French ornamental tree nursery within its European frame of reference. Finally, our research results the studies reveal the strategic and operational potential for competitiveness inherent to the management of the ION. In doing so, proposals for prescriptions of improvement of the management of the ION can be considered.

Le réseau interorganisationnel (RIO), au centre de convergences de plusieurs disciplines telles que l’économie, la sociologie des organisations, la géographie, mais également les sciences de gestion, a fait l’objet d’une multitude de recherches depuis les années 1970. Autour de ce concept transdisciplinaire gravitent des acceptions multiples, qui se rattachent à des courants théoriques très divers. Malgré ce foisonnement, la plupart des recherches en gestion focalisent l’attention sur les questions identitaires des RIO considérées comme insuffisantes à la compréhension des RIO. Peu de recherches se sont intéressées aux logiques organisationnelles, alors qu’elles constituent une piste majeure pour la compréhension du fonctionnement des RIO. Notre recherche s’inscrit dans ce cadre et vise à étudier le management des RIO comme une réponse à la recherche de la compétitivité. Notre thèse est structurée en deux parties. La première partie propose un rapprochement entre deux cadres théoriques (compétitivité et RIO) afin de pouvoir analyser la compétitivité au sein d’un RIO selon une logique organisationnelle. Nous adapterons cette analyse à un RIO de la pépinière ornementale française dans son contexte européen. La seconde partie est empirique et mobilise une approche qualitative multi-niveaux du RIO par la méthode d’étude de cas encastrés. Enfin, nos résultats de recherche mettent en évidence les potentiels de compétitivité stratégiques et opérationnels inhérents au management du RIO. Ce faisant, des perspectives d’amélioration du management du RIO peuvent être discutées.
