The thesis, entitled "the persistence of the taylorian division of labour: consequences on the performances in terms of quality", puts forward the validation of five hypotheses. These tend to demonstrate that the division of labour (the one that consists in distinguisling the sectors in charge of conception from those in charge of production in firms) constitutes a source of blocking of the progress which could be achieved as for as the quality of production is concerned. The five hypotheses are followed by two propositions permitting to consider a favourable evolution of the previously described situation. The five hypotheses are linked up so that, starting from two hypotheses describing a certain situation, three hypotheses tending to explain the observed statements can then be formulated. The observations concern the persistence of the taylorian division of labour and the major part played by the departments specialised in quality management. The explanations put forward political and psycho-sociological reasons (among others) for the persistence of taylorism ; they reveal the secondary aspect of quality management invoolves for supervisors and the low commitment of production workers to the processes of improvements criming at quality. The two propositions act along lines which are progressive and continuous changes in the structure, strategy, culture and behaviours. Research was mainly carried out within a leading french automobile company and over a period of several successive years.

La these, intitulee "la persistance de la division taylorienne du travail : consequences sur les performances en matiere de qualite", propose la validation de cinq hypotheses. Celles-ci tendent a demontrer que la division du travail (celle qui consiste a distinguer les secteurs en charge de la conception et de l'execution du travail dans les entreprises) constitue une source de blocage dans les progres realisables en matiere de qualite de la production. Les cinq hypotheses sont suivies de deux propositions pouvant permettre d'envisager une evolution favorable de la situation decrite. Les cinq hypotheses sont articulees de telle sorte qu'a partir de deux hypotheses descriptives d'une certaine situation, on puisse formuler trois hypotheses tendant a expliquer ce qui aura ete constate. Les analyses portent sur la persistance de la division taylorienne du travail et sur le role preponderant des services specialises de gestion de la qualite. Les explications mettent en evidence des raisons politiques et psychosociologiques (parmi d'autres) a la persistance du taylorisme, elles font apparaitre le caractere secondaire des enjeux relatifs a la qualite pour les agents de maitrise dans les entreprises et la faible implication du personnel de base dans les processus d'amelioration de la qualite produite. Les deux propositions vont dans le sens de changements progressifs et continus portant sur la structure, la strategie, la culture et les comportements. La recherche a ete conduite principalement au sein d'un grand groupe automobile francais et sur plusieurs annees successives.
