Comment comprendre la notion de réduction de variété des pratiques dans le cadre de la mise en place de progiciels ERP ?

ERP software is frequently seen as reducing the scope and variety of practices. Using such type of software is often associated to the idea of implementing a set of best practices, ie a set of practices recognised to be effective. Beyond the trivial statement, is that really the case? The research that follows is carried out in the context of the implementation of an ERP project in a Business School and aims to understand the impacts of ERP projects on work practices of the individuals. First, the concept of practices is studied at the individual, collective and organisational levels. Particularly, the research includes an analysis of practices in complex organisations in which the necessity for high quality and flexibility are rooted both in high levels of expected conformity and adequacy. Based on this initial point of view and with a comprehensive perspective, the impacts of ERP projects on the variety of (operational) practices is then further studied. The research retains three axis of exploration (the reduction of the scope of variety of practices, the integration of processes and the refocusing of meanings) that enable to particularly distinguish the respective rotes and effects of the leader of the concerned organization and the ERP in itself. Shall we see the ERP project as bringing further constraints for the leader to manage his organisation or as an adequate tool to impleme a deliberate and normative policy? The research concludes with a renewed approach to best practices in the context of ERP projects.

Les progiciels ERP sont fréquemment présentés comme réducteurs de variété en matière de pratiques. L'implémentation de tels progiciels est souvent associée à I'idée de mise en place de best practices, pratiques de référence retenues pour leur performance. Or, au-delà du propos d'évidence, est-ce réellement le cas ? Prenant pour cadre d'étude la mise en place d'un ERP au sein d'une Grande Ecole, la recherche menée vise comprendre les incidences d'un projet ERP sur les pratiques opérationnelles des individus. Dans un premier temps, la notion de pratique est remise en perspective dans des dimensions individuelles, collectives et organisationnelles. Plus particulièrement, les travaux menés s'attachent à resituer les pratiques des acteurs de production dans des organisations complexes où les nécessités de qualité et de flexibilité font appel tant aux exigences de conformité que d'adéquation. S'appuyant sur ce premier regard, et conservant une visée compréhensive, l'incidence des progiciels ERP sur la variété des pratiques opérationnelles est alors abordée. Privilégiant trois axes explicatifs, la réduction du spectre de variété des pratiques, l'intégration et le recentrage des significations, I'étude s'attache en particulier à distinguer le rôle joué par le dirigeant de celui tenu par I'ERP. L'ERP constitue-t-il un cadre contraignant supplémentaire pour le dirigeant ou est-il à voir comme un instrument adapté pour mettre en oeuvre une politique normative délibérée ? L'ensemble de ces réflexions débouche sur une proposition d'approche renouvelée quant à l'introduction de best practices au sein d'une organisation.
