L'effondrement d'un système monétaire de parités fixes : test empirique sur le système de Bretton Woods

The objective of this study is to theoretically and empirically analyze balance-of-ayments crises and the collapse of a monetary system with fixed parity in a small open economy. The theoretical models constructed by using the rational expectation approach interprete more clearly and more realistically the theoretical hypothesis: when there exists uncertainty in the futur domestic credit groth the reserve exhaustion is accelerated by the specualtive attacks generated from expectations of the depreciation of a domestic money. In consequence, the monetary system with fixed parity cannot be maintained and its collapse is precipitated. This theoretical hypothesis was tested on the bretton woods system. According to the test results, the hypothesis is rejected. However, the fact that the theoretical hypothesis should be rejected makes also conspicuous. - that it is difficult to find an "ad-hoc" model (such a model has not been found up to now) - that the multiple reasons which would have made the hypothesis be rejected cannot be turned to account, when we consider the means and data available at present.

L'objectif de cette etude est d'analyser de facon theorique et empirique les crises de la balance des paiements et l'effondrement d'un systeme monetaire de parites fixes dans une petite economie ouverte. Les modeles theoriques qui mettent en oeuvre des anticipations rationnelles ont permis une interpretation plus claire et plus realiste de l'hypothese theorique : lorsqu'il existe une incertitude sur la croissance future des creances a l'economie, l'epuisement des reserves est acceleree par les "poussees" speculatives determinees par les anticipations de depreciation de la monnaie nationale. Par consequent, un systeme monetaire de parites fixes est conduit a s'effondrer de facon precipitee. L'hypothese theorique a ete testee sur le systeme de bretton woods. Selon les resultats de tests, nous ne pouvons pas retenir cette hypothese. Le fait que l'hypothese theorique soit refusee met aussi en evidence: - qu'il est difficile de trouver un modele "ad-hoc" (un tel modele n'a jamais ete trouve jusqu'alors) - que les multiples raisons qui ont amene a refuser l'hypothese soient inexploitables compte-tenu des moyens et donnees disponibles a l'heure actuelle.
