The "gendarmerie nationale", that eight - century - old military body, mainly carrying out police assignments, is currently holder of real estate, made up of property from public and private estates of the state, but also including a number of rented facilities. A particular feature of our barracks is to gather together the premises for our various services, as well as numerous durellings, which greatly adds to their importance. The real estate management is conducted by the general board of the gendarmerie nationale, although decisions about real estate are to be made by other corporate bodies. In order to adapt the real estate lay-out to the requirements of the military bodies some deeds of public law transfer with the other armies and administrative bodies, are being carried out, along with alterations in ownership through property acquisiton, alienation and exchange of private law. The fact of belonging to the national defence still allows the use of procedures specific to the armed forces (such as compensative exchanges), which the gendarmerie nationale sometimes takes advantage of. Temporary occupation of the military reserved area, primarily settled with local authorities, and some of which being specific to the gendarmerie nationale, may be allowed ; morcover, provisions can be made for some property to be rented or placed at anyone's disposal. This wide array of entitlement to occupation,, results from successive alterations in liability to barracking, entrusted, in the course of time, either to local authorities, or to the state. This procedure is still being conducted in order to spare investment subsidies, as well as to enjoy easier conditions of settlement in the territory. The sensible use of the means entrusted to the gendarmerie nationale, enables this public utility ti improve and update the builgings housing our military units, but also, for the sake efficiency, the family. . .

La gendarmerie nationale, force militaire huit fois centenaire, exercant essentiellement des missions de police, occupe un parc immobilier qui est constitue de biens des domaines public et prive de l'etat mais aussi de nombreuses installations prises en location. Les casernes presentent la particularite de regrouper des locaux de service mais aussi des logements, ce qui accroit considerablement leur importance. La politique immobiliere est conduite par la direction generale de la gendarmerie nationale bien que les decisions domaniales doivent etre prises par d'autres autorites. Pour adapter le dispositif immobilier aux besoins des formations, sont mises en oeuvre les procedures de transfert du droit public avec les autres armees et administrations, ainsi que les mutations du droit de propriete par acquisition, alienation et echange du droit prive. Mais l'appartenance a la defense nationale autorise encore l'emploi de procedures particulieres aux armees (tels les echanges compenses) dont la gendarmerie tire parfois avantage. Des occupations temporaires du domaine militaire peuvent etre accordees et des formules variees de location et de mises a disposition, dont certaines sont propres a la gendarmerie, sont conclues principalement avec les collectivites locales. Cette diversite des titres d'occupation tient aux modifications successives de la charge du casernement confiee au cours de l'histoire tantot aux collectivites, tantot a l'etat. Elle se poursuit encore pour menager les credits d'investissement et par la necessite de disposer d'une certaine souplesse dans l'implantation territoriale. L'utilisation judicieuse des moyens qui sont confies a la gendarmerie permet a ce service public d'ameliorer et moderniser les immeubles ou sont implantes les locaux des unites mais aussi par souci d'efficacite, les logements familiaux concedes aux personnels.
