La femme entre le monde et le retrait du monde : l'attitude de Jérôme et d'Augustin

Fathers of the church but men moving in their times, jerom and augustin have dualist conception about woman: equivalent to men by her soul, she is submited to their authority owing to the posteriority of her body's formation, the originel sin, the influence of the old testament, roman laws and morals. However, they give her an office and a promotion inside the christian church if she adheres to their ideal of chastity. Classifed in an ascending order, married women, widows, virgins create the christian feminine elite with whom monastics are closely associated. If they build up more a theology about marriage than rules of law they give, in the other hand, many advices for lack of laws again about virginity, widowhood and feminine monachism. The strength of their exhortations prove of the reserve of laic society strongly yet impregnated by paganism but also they give a clear indication of solicitude with regard to them.

Peres de l'eglise mais hommes de leur temps, jerome et augustin ont une conception dualiste de la femme: equivalente a l'homme par son ame, elle lui est subordonnee en raison de la posteriorite de sa formation, du peche originel, de l'influence des ecritures veterotestamentaires, des lois romaines et des moeurs. Cependant, ils lui octroient un role et une promotion au sein de l'eglise si elles adherent a leur ideal de chastete. Selon un ordre croissant, femmes mariees, veuves, vierges forment l'elite chretienne a laquelle les moniales sont etroitement associees. S'ils edifient plus une theologie du mariage qu'un droit, ils livrent en revanche de nombreux conseils, a defaut d'une reglementation, concernant la virginite, le veuvage et le monachisme feminin. La vigueur de leurs exhortations temoigne de la reticence de la societe fortement encore impregnee du paganisme mais aussi de la sollicitude qu'ils leur demontrent.
