The pilotage contract binds a firm designated as the "pilot" firm to supervise the realization of a construction project for the account of a client or constructors. The pilot enterprise will carry out the project according to the costs, the quality and the time constraints allotted for the accomplishment of the work. Involved in the construction are several firms, sometimes organized in conjoined or jointly responsible groups which form a partnership society or a temporary grouping of companies. The pilot, as a building contractor, stands security for the other firms and will usually answer for the non-optimization of the building site.

Le contract de pilotage est celui par lequel une entreprise nommee "pilote" est chargee par le maitre de l'ouvrage ou les entreprises de diriger la realisation d'un projet de construction en vue d'optimiser l'operation envisagee, notamment par rapport aux couts, aux delais et a la qualite des travaux a executer. Ceux-ci incombent a plusieurs entreprises qui interviennent parfois au sein de groupements conjoints ou solidaires constitues sous la forme d'une societe en participation ou d'un groupement momentane d'entreprises. Le pilote qui peut intervenir comme la caution des autres entreprises repond generalement de la non optimisation du chantier en tant que locateur d'ouvrage.
