During the sixteenth century the fate of French monarchy and of Brittany is simultaneously at stake. Whereas the king is reinforcing his sovereignty over his territory, Brittany is experiencing the first effects of royal domination. At that time is juridical status is changing from the independence of a dukedom to the autonomy of a royal province. Over this period the governor of Brittany appears as a essential personage. As the representative of the king and the suprem authority in Brittany he makes the king's sovereignty triumph over his territory while striving to conciliate it with the particularisms of the province. The governor becomes the intermediary between the king and his new subjects, the architect of the integration of Brittany into France but also one autonomous force able to influence the progress of history.

Le XVIe siècle voit simultanément se jouer le destin de la royauté française et celui de la Bretagne. Tandis que le monarque affermit sa souveraineté sur son territoire, la Bretagne connaît les premiers effets de la domination royale. Son statut juridique passe alors de l'indépendance d'un duché à l'autonomie d'une province royale. Durant cette période, le gouverneur de Bretagne apparaît comme un personnage central. En tant que représentant personnel du roi et autorité suprême en Bretagne, il fait triompher la souveraineté du monarque sur ce territoire tout en s'efforcant de la conciller avec les particularismes de la province. Dès lors, le gouverneur s'inscrit comme l'intermédiaire entre le roi et ses nouveaux sujets, l'artisan de l'intégration de la Bretagne à la France mais aussi une force autonome capable d'influer sur le déroulement de l'Histoire.
