The first chapter, the mezquital valley nahnu (otomi), gives a general description of the nahnus' known history, some elements of the social and cultural situation of mezquital indians today as well as an account of the economical context in which they live. The second chapter, state and power in indigenous regions, delineates the relationship between the ethnic group and the nation parting from the mechanisms of power and mediation from a historical point of view, proposing a theoretical interpretation that will be the back drop for the analysis of the mezquital situation. The mezquital valley - a "pilot" region for the relationship-between indians and state, chapter iii, is the setting, in the mezquital valley, of the previously described general mechanisms. Different social actors are described in their relationship with regard to one another, with the aim of portraying the situation in which the ethnic group as well as the indigenous teachers live, act and relate themselves to other social actors nowadays.

Dans le premier chapitre, les nahnu (otomis) du valle del mezquital, on trouvera un cadre general decrivant brievement l'histoire connue des nahnu, quelques elements de la situation sociale et culturelle des indiens du mezquital aujourd'hui, ainsi qu'une description du contexte economique dans lequel ils vivent. Le deuxieme chapitre, l'etat et le pouvoir dans les regions indiennes, est egalement une mise en situation, de mecanismes cette fois-ci, qui situe la relation entre ethnie et nation, a partir des mecanismes de pouvoir et de mediation du point de vue historique, proposant une lecture theorique qui sera la toile de fond de l'analyse de la situation au mezquital. Valle del mezquital - une region "pilote" dans les relations entre les indiens et l7etat, le chapitre iii, est la mise en scene au mezquital des mecanismes generaux decrits precedemment. Les differents acteurs sociaux sont decrits dans leurs relations les uns avec les autres, avec le but de dresser le tableau de la situation dans laquelle, actuellement, vivent, agissent et entrent en relation avec d'autres acteurs l'ethnie aussi bien que les instituteurs indiens.
