The portugese began to arrive in france at the end og the 1960's. Very quickly this popultion of migrant workers found its way to the foreign community. The geographical distrution of the portugese migratory workers has no similarity with that of other foreigners. The clandestine nature of their arrival, the way in which information and possibilities for entry are circulated and the opportunities for unskilled manual labour contribute towards the spatial distribution of the population. The portugese community is characterized by its geographic stability. Portugese integrate with great ease into such jobs as the btp and industry, where they occupy to this day positions as manual workers. Women are also included in this migration, and rejoin their husbands very quickly and soon find work, particularily as domestics. These families, as a result of the two salaries and their parsimonius way of living allow them to save considerable sums of money. These thrifly migrants justify their departure from portugal by the knowledge that they will finally return home. If a number of portugese have already return to their country of origin, there are others, whilst waiting for this moment to arrive that share their time between france and portugal. As a result of this, migration between the two countries is particularily active and implies a particular adaptation vis a vis the social structure in france.

Alors que l'immigration portugaise s'oriente pendant des siècles vers le nouveau monde, les travailleurs portugais puis leurs familles arrivent en France à la fin des années 1960. Très rapidement, cette population s'est glissée au premier rang des communautés étrangères. La géographie de l'espace migratoire portugais ne s'apparente pas à celle des autres étrangers. La clandestinité des arrivées, les filières, les opportunités d'emploi pour une main d'œuvre non qualifiée participent à la répartition de cette population. Une faible mobilité géographique caractérise cette communauté. Elle s'est intégrée avec facilité dans le btp et l'industrie en y occupant les emplois de type ouvrier. Dans ce mouvement migratoire, les femmes arrivent très rapidement après leurs époux et travaillent particulièrement dans les services. Ces familles, grâce au double salaire et a un mode de vie parcimonieux accumulent une forte épargne. Pour ces migrants économiques le retour légitime le départ. Si nombre de portugais sont rentrés au pays, d'autres en attendant ce moment partagent leur vie entre la France et le Portugal. De ce fait, la circulation migratoire entre les deux espaces est particulièrement intense. La perspective du retour implique une adaptation spécifique à l'espace social français.
