The derro project, which means rural economic development of the occidental rif, began in 1960, in order to protect the soil from erosion, and to improve the country people standard of living. Twenty-five years later, a carefull study of the natural landscapes, of the local society, and of the carrying out of the derro project in taounate and in the oued mellah, leads to the conclusion that the initial aims were far to be reached.

Le projet derro, qui signifie developpement economique et rural du rif occidental (au maroc), a commence en 1960, dans le double but de sauvegarder les sols de l'erosion, et d'ameliorer le niveau de vie des paysans. Vingt ans apres, une etude soigneuse des milieux naturels, de la societe locale, et des realisations du projet derro a taounate et dans l'oued mellah, conduit a la conclusion que les objectifs initiaux sont loins d'etre atteints.
