Situated in eastern algeria, batna is in a strategic position for travel. It's geographical situation in particular attracted the interest of france at the time of colonization. So batna was founded in 1844 by colonel buttafoco more for strategic aims than for its agricultural qualities. After independance the state of algeria gave it an important place in its socio-economic policy. It was chosen as one of the principal poles for development. This policy has caused the area around batna to be centred on batna, with this town functioning as an important centre for administrative, socioeconomic and political affairs and for services.

Situee dans l'est algerien, batna est dotee d'une position stategique de passage. Sa situation geographique fit l'objet d'un interet particulier de la france, lors de la colonisation. Batna fut donc creee en 1844 par le colonel buttafoco, plus dans un but strategique que par rapport a ses atouts agricoles. Apres l'independance, l'etat algerien lui accorda une place non negligeable dans sa politique socio-economique. Elle fut choisie comme un des principaux poles de developpement. Cette politique a fait de la region de batna une region polarisee et de son chef-lieu un veritable centre de commandement administratif, socio-economique, politique et de services.
