The present study deals with the open green spaces in the broader urban cluster of the Greek capital, investigating them from both an environmental and social point of view and generally considering them as being an element for upgrading the living standard. Special emphasis is laid on the assumption that open green spaces are considered to be a public equipment of proximity. In the beginning, the study looks into the background of open green spaces, from the establishment of the Greek capital (1830) till today and describes the prime reason of the existing situation. Following a thorough processing of the existing data, the first part of this essay describes the present situation, analyzes the proper information concerning the planning and the creation of open green spaces in Athens and points out their insufficiency and their non-balanced distribution. Furthermore, the favorable influence of open green spaces is demonstrated, with the purpose of facing the problem of air pollution in Athens, as well as preventing the adverse natural phenomena (heatwave, floods) that the Greek capital suffers from. The second part analyzes the attitude of the Athenians towards the open green spaces and proves the major emphasis that the residents of the Athens basin lay on this significant public project of the city.

Le présent travail a pour objet l'étude des espaces verts dans la région de la conurbation athénienne et leur examen du point de vue de l'environnement, du point de vue social et plus généralement comme moyen de réhabiliter la qualité de la vie. Il accorde une importance particulière aux espaces verts comme un équipement public de proximité. Nous procédons d'abord à une retrospective historique visant à appréhender l'évolution des espaces verts, de la constitution de la capitale hellénique jusqu'à nos jours, et à rechercher les causes de leur situation actuelle. La première partie décrit, en exploitant les données existantes, cette situation, analyse les informations pertinentes disponibles sur la planification et la création d'espaces verts à Athènes et met en évidence leur insuffisance et le déséquilibre de leur répartition. Elle fait preuve du rôle actif des espaces verts tant dans la lutte contre la pollution atmosphérique que dans la prévention des phénomènes naturels défavorables (canicule, inondations) qui frappent la capitale hellénique. La deuxième partie analyse l'attitude des citadins athéniens vis-à-vis des espaces verts et révèle la grande importance qu'ils accordent à cet équipement public indispensable de leur ville. Elle fait ainsi apparaitre les désirs, les préférences, les attentes et les exigences des athéniens en matière d'espaces verts et la nécessité absolue qu'ils leur attribuent.
