From the chronological standpoint to a more geographical concept, ancient buildings bear witness to a natural and human context both diverse and precise. The conceptualization of ancient constructions is the first objective of the thesis, the fruit of a long labour of study and systhesis born of experience of restoration projects. The regions of france reveal ancient structure dependent for the most part on local building materials to which their architecture andeavoured to adapt. The second, more experimental, objective concerns ancient buildings in areas of seismic activity. It represents a original extension of the operative methodology developed for studying ancient buildings. In know or suspected earthquake zones the early dwellings gave priority to "anti-seismic" reinforcement. In order to draw lessons from our architectural past, first it must be recognised and, in many cases, redicovered. The third objective of this research is to set out a methodology for the architectural analysis of ancient buildings, patiently developed over many years, collated and applied with varying degrees of rigour and success at a national administrative level. In presenting this method we will demonstrate the close links between these buildings and their natural surrondings.

De la reference chronologique a un concept plus geographique, le bati ancien temoigne d'un environnement naturel et humain a la fois divers et precis. La conceptuasisation du bati ancien est le premier objectif de cette these. Elle resulte d'un long travail de reflexion et de synthese issu de l'experience des operations de rehabilitation. Les regions francaises recelent des batis anciens principalement tributaires des materiaux d'origine locale auxquels les structures architecturales se sont efforcees de s'adapter. Le deuxieme objectif, plus experimental, concerne le bati ancien en zones sismiques. Il represente une extension originale de la methodologie operatoire mise au point pour l'etude du bati ancien. Dans les regions ou les tremblements de terre etaient connus et craints l'habitat ancien a une priorite, donnee aux structures a renforcements "antisismiques". Pour garder les lecons de ce passe architectural, il convient de le connaitre, et dans bien des cas, de le redecouvrir. C'est le troisieme objectif de cette recherche de proposer une methodologie d'analyse architecturale du bati ancien, patiemment elaboree durrant de nombreuses annees, conduite collectivement, appuyee avec plus ou moins de force et de reussite a l'echelle administrative nationale. Nous ferons ressortir en presentant cette methode les liens qui ont uni etroitement ces batis avec leur environnement naturel.
