The purport of this thesis is to study the ties between la rochelle's inhabitants and their city from the standpoint of space. In the first part we are told how the city grew and developed, then was organized and peopled. In the second part we are shown that several socially varied areas do exist in the city and we are provided with an accurate description of each of them. As for the third part, it is meant to disclose the important part played by space in social reproduction although it may appear hardly noticeable at first.

Cette these a pour objet d'etudier les rapports que les habitants de la rochelle entretiennent avec l'espace de leur ville. La premiere partie retrace la formation de l'agglomeration et presente son organisation, son peuplement. La seconde demontre l'existence de quartiers socialement diversifies, et s'applique a les qualifier. La troisieme revele le role de l'espace dans la reproduction sociale, qui nous parait essentiel quoique discret.
