The state of morocco, along with the decentralization and the administrative distribution, gives a new place to small towns within its project of development and territory planning. It is a question of impropving the quality of urbanization. This new role would bring about socio-spatial and socioeconomic changes of small towns. Traditional and modern aspects of space and economy are intermingled today in these in these towns. Will an understanding of the mechanisms underlying these changes clear up the present debate about the relevance of this new policy of national development. Have the social, spatial and economic changes of the last years affected the activites of small towns, their roles in their spaces of development. Which are the conditions that lead to changes in their mode of operation and their participation to the reconstruction of local societies. Do the particularly perceptible aspects of town planning, at the national level, and the socio-economic situation of small town allow the achievement of this project of development. This study aims at understanding the mechanism, the socio-economic and socio-spatial relaity of these changes.

L'etat marocain,avec le nouveau decoupage administratif et la decentralisation, accorde une place nouvelle aux petites villes dans son projet de developpement et de l'amenagrement du territoire. Il s'agit de parvenir a une meilleure qualite de l'urbanisme et de cadre de vie ainsi qu' a une autonomie de la collectivite locale en matiere de developpement. Ce nouveau role allait bouleerser le systeme sociospatial et socio-economique de ces petites villes. Le traditionnel et le moderne dans la societe, dans l'espace et dans l'economie se melent aujourd'hui dans ces communes. La connaissance des mecanismes de ces changements peut-elle eclairer le debat engage autour de la eprtinence de cette nouvelle politique du developpement national. Les mutations sociales, spatiales et economiques des dernieres annees ont-elles affecte les activites des petites villes, leur roles sur les espaces de rayonnement. Dans quelles conditions ces evolutions changent leur fonctionnement et participation a la recomposition des societes locales. Le caractere particulierement sensible de l'urbanisme, au niveau natioanl, et la situation socio- economique de la petite ville permettent-ils de realiser ce projet de developpement. Cette etude vise a comprendre le mecanisme et la realitre socio-economiques et sociospatiales que recouvrent ces changements.
